Fun, One-Day FAR Adventure Race at Searchmont
Frontier Adventure Challenge
Searchmont Resort, Sault Ste Marie, ON
Saturday, Sept 6, 2008
The Frontier Adventure Challenge comes to Sault Ste Marie this fall! This exciting and fun team multisport event has been challenging adventure athletes across the country for years. Now it’s the Sault’s turn. Teams of three and solo racers will compete for prizing and glory while biking, hiking, paddling, and navigating through an unmarked wilderness racecourse that spans over 40km. Teams of three can be all-male, all-female, or coed, or racers can go solo.
In partnership with Searchmont Resort and Tourism Sault Ste Marie, this eight hour race will feature the best trails and scenery around the incredible Searchmont area. Teams will discover more than just the great adventure potential of the area; they will discover the value of teamwork, and they’ll push past their perceived limits. Searchmont provides an incredible athlete's village atmosphere, with a beautiful backdrop, great amenities, excellent accommodations, and a perfect location for a post-race social!
And to celebrate the increasing participation of young adventure racers, primarily from the Algoma Region, the race is offering a special youth entry fee of $295 for anyone 21 & under. That’s a discount of $100 off the regular price.
REGISTER EARLY for your chance to win a SKI & STAY WEEKEND FOR TWO valued at $500! Enter and pay in full by July 21, and someone on your team may win two nights accommodation at the Great Northern Hotel in Sault Ste Marie, and 2 days skiing at Searchmont Resort for 2 people! The winner will be randomly selected and announced on July 22 from all registered racers. At a $500 value, that's worth acting quickly!
Frontier Adventure Sports, the event organizers, say the event is for everyone. “We want racers of all ages to make this a memorable weekend event,” says Geoff Langford, the race director. “With the right level of success, we can make this an annual event. The course offers both an Advanced and Regular option, making this a race for everyone. It’s perfect cross-training for serious biking, trail running, or paddling athletes, and a great change for triathletes. But at the same time, it’s completely achievable for the weekend warrior.”

Rockstar Adventure Race - Race the Rockstar July 12th 2008
A new twist on the adventure racing standard! Storm Racing & Hark Events have fused their distinctive race formats to create an 8-hour rock concert the likes of which you’ve never experienced before.
Hosted by two of Ontario’s most acclaimed multi-sport event companies, RockstAR is this summer’s “must-do” adventure race.
Teams of two or three will be faced with two race stages converging at the “Hub;” our amazing host venue in the adventure epicentre of the Haliburton Highlands. Stage One features a 2-3 hour marked mountain bike course that will pit racers against the region’s legendary ATV & snowmobile trail networks, in a battle to buy valuable time for the second stage.
Teams will then have until the 8-hour mark to tackle a rogaine-style trek & paddle course, where strategy and quick decision-making will be equally weighted with speed and endurance. And once it’s all over; you, your teammates and your fellow racers can celebrate like rock stars at a post-race beach party under the cottage country night skies.
And the crown jewel of this epic race experience? The Bark Lake Leadership Centre is one of Ontario’s best-known adventure racing hotspots, and quite possibly the most ideal host site anywhere. Featuring a multitude of all-inclusive accommodations options and surrounded by seemingly never-ending networks of trail, Bark Lake is the adventure racing equivalent of your favourite concert venue; now host to the summer’s hottest concert tour!

Kidsfest Run for Change and Day of Fun - June 9, 2008
The countless smiles on the children’s faces said it all. What a great day! Hundreds of kids from right across Ontario gathered for the year end finale run – Run for Change 5km. Once a week for the entire school year volunteers of the Run and Read program take the kids out for a training run then return back to the school gym where books are handed out and literacy games are played, all in anticipation of the year end Run for Change 5km and day of fun. This year’s event was blessed with great weather and was attended by an amazing group of caring volunteers. At 9:15am, after the singing of Oh Canada by ex-Toronto Argonaut running back Clifford Ivory, the kids took to the race. As race director I would like to give a big heart felt THANK-YOU to all the volunteers and sponsors. Without their generous support this event could not have taken place. I can not say enough about the Kidsfest crew. Their guidance, their inspiration and their relentless commitment to tackle and eliminate poverty has provided inspiration to so many. To all the great sponsors who recognize this truly worthwhile cause to back – Scotioabank Group, Kiwanis Club, Brooks Canada, Licks, Schoolastic, Coke, Running Free, The Italian Bakery, Toronto Track and Field Center, York University Security, Metro Toronto Police – 31 and 53 Division, RCMP, JeansMarines, St. Johns Ambulance, Team Running Free – Thank-you.

Important Announcement Regarding Hoax "Running Free Bra Ads"
On Friday, February 22, 2008 several fictitious "ads" began appearing all over the internet. These ads were tasteless and offensive. It also included our Running Free logo and branding. WE DID NOT IN ANYWAY AUTHORIZE THE USE OF OUR LOGO IN ASSOCIATION WITH THESE "ADS". Several months ago we were approached by the ad agency DDB Toronto. They came to us with a "pro-bono advertising opportunity" and asked to pitch us an idea. They did so and presented these disturbing images. Our reaction was - "we will never run those!" That is how it was left off. As co-owner of Running Free I am embarrassed and ashamed to have our company associated with this pathetic excuse for marketing. I apologize on behalf of the whole crew here at Running Free for the anger and frustration created by those images.

Tri for a Cure SPINATHON, Saturday February 23, 2008
* Time: 1pm to 6pm
* Location: Absolute Endurance
* 115 Merton Street, Toronto
* Registration: www.sueandrick.com
This will be a fantastic event featuring Prizes, Swag, Guest Cyclists, Silent Auction!
Hi everyone, In 2005, Sue and I embarked on our first Ironman journey. Like others we wanted to see how far we could push ourselves and enjoy the fact that we'd become the healthiest we'd ever be in our lives. That's a pretty large statement considering we're both from running backgrounds. During the middle of our training we lost Sue's aunt (Marilyn Johnson) to cancer and we promised that we'd do something in her name and her memory. Thus, "Tri for a Cure" was born. We went on to raise over $16,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and made people more aware of the disease along the way. Oh, ya and we reached our goal of completing the Ironman and entered 'a whole new world of fitness'!
In 2006, we passed Tri for a Cure to one of our friends, Phaedra Kennedy, who raced Ironman Lake Placid and for her aunt. Our goal at this point was to pass this program along to others who'd take the ball and run with it from year to year. In late 2006/early 2007 CBCF approached us and adopted the program. We acted as consultants to help get things started. Check out This Website for more information on the program and where it's ended up!!
Fast forward to 2008. Sue and I are hosting a "Spinathon" at Absolute Endurance here in Toronto where riders will peddle for a 4 hour session to raise funds for a great cause and to raise awareness about the Tri for a Cure program. We have Tara Norton (pro Ironman triathlete) as a guest spinner and a few other guests to keep people engaged during the set. We will also have someone from CBCF and hopefully a breast cancer survivor dropping in as well. The focus is on staying healthy (best way to reduce your risk) and letting people know that there's a program out there that they can get involved in if they want to get into triathlon and raise funds/awareness for a great cause. For the full details on our spinathon visit www.sueandrick.com. Oh ya, did I mention we have a dj as well? Yep, this is going to be fun!
Sincerely,
Rick Cadman

2nd Annual Snowshoe Raid, Saturday February 23, 2008
Hi everyone,
We’re excited to announce registration is officially open for the 2nd Annual Snowshoe Raid taking place on Saturday February, 23, 2008. However, we’re even more excited about the ample snowfall Horseshoe Valley has received over the past few weeks. Even a few downhill ski runs are open! Once again, Horseshoe Valley and its diverse array of terrain and forests will play host to the event. For those not familiar, the Snowshoe Raid is a team event, where competitors utilize map & compass to visit as many checkpoints as possible within a three-hour time limit. The format is great for beginners and experts alike, and the time-limit ensures all participants arrive back at the finish in time for the post race party and awards. Here are some comments from last year’s race:
“Huge Thank-You for a fabulous event. The course was great, the venue was great, the volunteers and organizers were wonderful, the prizes were amazing, even the weather and snow conditions co-operated! Oh, love the gaiters! Please do it again!”
“What a fantastic idea. Well organized & perfect conditions. You have a winner. Bela(the dog) & I had so much fun crashing through the snow for 3 hours. Thanks to all the volunteers that brought so much to the experience.”
“It's a keeper. On my "must do" list of events to attend for future years.”
“Best new adventure race or run that Ontario has seen in many years. Already looking forward to next year.”
More details and registration can be found on our website @ www.dontgetlost.ca/raid
A huge thank-you to all our sponsors, especially; Salomon, Sojourn and Running Free. They ensured practically everyone went home with a prize last year.
This year’s course will cover some of the best snowshoeing terrain Ontario has to offer. With over 2000 acres of untouched, powder-filled forests, blanketed over countless hills and valleys, we couldn’t ask for anything more!
Horseshoe Valley Navigation Clinic
Adventure Running, Mountain Biking and Paddling guru Bill Trayling will be hosting a Snowshoe Navigation Clinic on Sunday February 17, 2008 from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. The course will include 30 minutes of in-class instruction followed by 2 hours of field practice.
Cost is $45 per person.
To register, please contact Bill directly at btrayling@scdsb.on.ca or 705 835 5294. Note space is limited to 10 participants, so register ASAP if you’re interested.

Salomon creates 2008 Mountain-X Race Qualifier in Ontario, Canada
For five consecutive days last summer, teams of adventurers from all
over the world took to the mountainous region of Savoie Mont Blanc in
France to trail run, mountain bike, paddle, swim, and climb as part of
the inaugural Saab Salomon Mountain-X Race (mountainxrace.com).
North America was represented by teams Salomon / Crested Butte,
Paparazzi, and Nike…in 2008, one of the teams to cheer for could be yours!
In partnership with Storm Racing and Golden Horseshoe Orienteering (GHO), Salomon Canada has
created a opportunity for a team of three to win a free entry and travel package for participation in the
2008 Saab Salomon Mountain-X Race slated for July 21st to 26th, taking place in the French Alps once
again.
“Canada has such a rich history in trail running and multi-sport racing competitions”, comments
Francis Argouin, Marketing Manager for Salomon Canada. “We wanted to celebrate the flavour of what
Salomon created in France last summer and give people a chance to vie for a slot in this year’s
international event. Given the momentum and professionalism of the event partners we’ve selected to
work with, we’re really excited about creating an incentive for all levels of participants to hit the trails this
spring.”
“When Salomon approached us with the idea, we were all over it!”, said Mike Waddington of
GHO. “We’ve been organizing orienteering and adventure runs for years so we’ve become very familiar
with Salomon and the type of off-road events they support. We’re so happy to be involved so you can
expect an extra special event this Spring!”
Sean Roper, Race Director for Storm Racing and member of Team Salomon-Suunto’s adventure
racing squad adds, “Our events have grown substantially since our first race in 2002 and our participants
have come to love the race experience Storm the Trent offers. This project came to us at just the right
time as we can extend the reach of our sport to even more people, whether they’re competing for the big
prize or just out for some fun in the outdoors. The prize winning team can expect a loud ovation from the
500 others that will be in Warsaw this May.”
To become the prize winning COED or OPEN threesome, your team must participate in both events this
Spring and accumulate the most points:

Warm up in Mexico: Adventure Race Training Camps
(Jalcomulco, Mexico) Having a hard time fitting in all the training and skills development you need to take your Adventure Racing to the next level, or just to get into the sport? Frontier Adventure Racing and Esprit Whitewater have the ideal solution – they’re offering two very different week-long adventure race training camps this March in the coastal mountains near Veracruz, Mexico.
An extensive adventure race training curriculum for both weeks focuses on the skills and knowledge required to complete your first race and/or take you to the next level in competitiveness. Participants will discover the tips, tricks and lessons learned from organizing and competing in some of the biggest and most challenging events in the world.
Both weeks feature workshops and certifications for navigation, ropes, first aid for AR, flatwater and whitewater paddling, swiftwater rescue, mountain biking, night travel, teamwork, strategy, transitions, nutrition, training plans and more! And the bonus - both camps are all-inclusive. Once you arrive in Veracruz, you won’t have to spend another cent.
The classic Jalcomulco AR Training Camp (March 8-15) is based in the idyllic mountain village of Jalcomulco, at the confluence of three river valleys. With everything from flat and white water, thickly treed hills and valleys, rocky canyons, singletrack of all levels, waterfalls and big walls, it’s easy to fill our senses and our training days. It’s also not far to get back for the fabulous food, drinks, atmosphere and social time in the evenings. Plus we’ll cap off the week with an 8-hour race to put all your new skills into practice!
New this year is the Pico2Playa Expedition Training Week (March 15-22). Designed to simulate the expedition racing experience, participants will trek up the slopes of the highest peak in Mexico, Pico de Orizaba, bike little-known singletrack trails, paddle stunning class II-III rivers, trek through canyons, on plateaus and to quaint villages, learning ropes skills at waterfalls and canyons en route, stopping most nights at camps and huts, as we make our way to the beaches of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico for a big city finish.
If the perfect weather, ideal conditions, welcoming villages, and spectacular terrain for outdoor adventure aren’t tempting enough, the quality and content of training certainly should be:
Two of the world’s best adventure racers and course designers, Lawrence Foster (Team Holofibre) and Bob Miller (Team Supplierpipeline), instructing navigation, trekking, biking, strategy, teamwork, ropes, and more
The paddling, first aid, and ropes experts of Esprit Rafting (recently named #2 Outfitter in the World by National Geographic!), including owners and world champion paddlers Jim and Erin Coffey.
Race Director of some of the most respected races in the world (Raid the North Extreme, AR World Champs 2004), Geoff Langford
All of this – spectacular location, top-notch instruction, and an all-inclusive week-long getaway – for only $1495 CDN. Registration is now open at www.raidthenorth.com – but act quick. The first five registrations for each week will receive a valuable AR Kick Start Kit – an RTNX buff and 2007 DVD, a heat/ice pack, and $50 off any 2008 Frontier event (total value $120). Each camp is limited to 16 participants, don’t miss out! And if you’re really focused on the podium, consider joining us for both weeks – you’ll get a $100 discount.
