    About Chi Running

    Adapted from www.chirunning.com

ChiRunning combines the inner focus and flow of T'ai Chi with the power and energy of running to create a revolutionary running form and philosophy that takes the pounding, pain, and potential damage out of the sport of running. The ChiRunning program increases mental clarity and focus, enhances the joy of running, and turns running into a safe and effective lifelong program for health, fitness, and well-being.

More than 24 million people in the U.S. alone run, however 65% of runners in the U.S., 15.6 million people, will have to stop running at least once during the year due to injury. Millions more quit or avoid running because of injury or the fear of causing long-term damage. Yet, there have been few new ideas or fresh approaches to running and injury prevention. The symptoms are being treated, but the problem has not been solved - until now.

The ChiRunning program offers a real solution to the high rate of injury that plagues the sport of running.

There are countless books, courses, and classes on how to improve your golf swing, your tennis game, and your cycling technique, but none teaching how to run properly. The ChiRunning program fills this void by teaching people bio-mechanically correct running form that is in line with the laws of physics and with the ancient principles of movement found in T'ai Chi. ChiRunning technique is based on the same principles and orientation as Yoga, Pilates, and T'ai Chi: working with core muscles; integrating mind and body; and focused on overall and long term performance and well-being.

Whether you're an injured runner, a beginner runner, a marathon runner, a triathlete, or someone who runs to stay fit, ChiRunning has helped thousands improve their technique, reduce injury and achieve personal goals. ChiRunning helps reduce and eliminate: shin splints, IT band syndrome, hamstring injury, plantar faciitus, hip problems and the most famous running injury of all: knee injury.

Conditioning your mind can be just as important as conditioning your body. ChiRunning can be a meditative practice that focuses your mind, lifts your spirits and opens the flow of chi in your life.

What would you do to Walk again?

If you’ve ever had to rely on a paramedic, this is your chance to say “thank you”

On February 27, 2010, up to 180 fitness enthusiasts will participate in STEP IT UP For KEVIN, a 6 hour fitness challenge in support of spinal cord injured paramedic Kevin Mills. The event will take place at Wynn Fitness, 2737 Keele Street, Toronto and will feature some of the top indoor cycling instructors from across the GTA.

Kevin Mills, a paramedic of 10 years with Toronto EMS, sustained a spinal cord injury in February 2009 while on vacation in Cuba with his family. After evacuation to Canada and surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital, Kevin began his grueling rehabilitation. Recently, Kevin embarked on an intensive rehab program called “Step It Up.” Considering his initial prognosis, paralysis from the shoulders down, Kevin has been making incredible progress and vows he will walk again. Prior to his accident, Kevin was an avid rock climber, runner, and outdoorsman.

In light of the immense expenses associated with Kevin’s situation, an account has been set up to collect contributions for Kevin and his family. This fundraising event is intended to assist Kevin on his road to recovery and realize his full potential.

The event will be open to the public and all abilities and fitness levels are encouraged to participate. This event is unique in that it will expand on the indoor group cycling concept incorporating treadmill runners. Riders and runners may participate for one hour up to the entire duration of the event as a solo or as part of a relay team. Participants may even sign up for both modalities creating their own duathlon experience.

Full event details are available at www.kevinmills.org. Online registration opens January 1, 2010. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the Kevin Mills Relief Fund.

Free Bra Fitting Clinics at Running Free

    DID YOU KNOW?
    • 75% of women are wearing the wrong size bra.
    • Younger girls will often opt out of participating in physical activities because of insecurities or discomfort caused by an ill fitting bra.
    • Larger breasted women often choose low impact activities, thereby closing the door to many rewarding sports simply because an ill fitting bra is not giving adequate support.
All Running Free locations are proud to be conducting a FREE Bra Fitting Clinic, presented by Canadian Olympian and Marathon Record holder, Silvia Ruegger. Silvia has empowered women nationwide by giving them confidence to participate in activities previously avoided due to improper bra fit.

    Dates and Times:
    RF Newmarket - Monday, November 2nd - 7:00pm [MAP]
    Please RSVP to newmarket@runningfree.com

    RF Milton - Tuesday, November 3rd - 7:00pm [MAP]

    Please RSVP to barrie@runningfree.com

    RF Markham - Wednesday, November 11th - 7:00pm [MAP]
    Please RSVP to markham@runningfree.com

Come out to this totally FREE clinic and learn the basics about bra fitting. Silvia will share her Olympic story and pass on her expertise. Silvia will coach young and mature women on how to make the selection that works for their individual needs. Lack of support, chaffing, or plain irritation will be a thing of the past.

Bring your daughter, sister, mother, aunt, or grandmother and help spread the word: any woman can take part in any activity in total comfort. This interactive clinic will be supported by our all-female fitting teams at each store (that's right, no guys allowed!). Clinics will run for approximately 1.5-2 hours and there will be plenty of time for questions.

    SPECIAL NOTES
RSVP's are appreciated, but not necessary. Each store will be closed to the public during the clinic. Silvia's mission is to educate as many young women as possible, so girls all of ages are encouraged to attend.

    TEACHERS AND COACHES
If your club or school is in close proximity to one of our Running Free stores, and you think your students or athletes would benefit from a bra fitting clinic, we can arrange private session for you. The clinic could be conducted at any Running Free store or at your school. Please contact the appropriate location via email for more information.

PLEASE RSVP VIA EMAIL DIRECTLY TO THE STORE YOU WISH TO ATTEND THE CLINIC AT.

    Salomon DontGetLost.ca Adventure Running Series

25K & 10K adventure runs for teams of 3 "The Niagara Escarpment (aka the Giant's Rib) was a formidable physical barrier to early explorers in southern Ontario. Teams can expect lots of technical running and navigation as they Raid the Rib."

Launched by the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association, the program has helped over 90,000 women since it’s inception in 1992. The benefits of the program go well beyond beauty.

Our run series participants are encouraged to raise funds and awareness for this unique campaign. The relationship with Look Good, Feel Better and the CCTFA means really cool swag for our runners kits. Also, by registering for one of the women’s only series races by June 1st you will be entered in a draw to win one of five fantastic swag bags worth $250, compliments of the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association. Don’t miss your chance to win, register today! Visit our charity page for more information and a link to LGFB.

Just announced! Walkers will have their own start time and separate results at the Toronto Island Women’s 10K and Half Marathon as well as the Wasaga Beach Half Marathon.

Salomon Snowshoe RAID - Saturday February 21st 2009

    Presented by Fox River Socks

NEW FOR 2009! In addition to the increasingly popular 3hr Snowshoe Raid both 5k and 10k marked snowshoe races have been added to the schedule. The marked courses were added to cater to participants still looking for a great day out in the snow and hills, but for those who might not be ready for the; navigational, team, or time commitments of the full 3hr Raid. The goal is to introduce as many people as possible to navigation based sports, in the hope that competitors participating on the marked courses might hang around and try a sampling of the full 3hr SNOWSHOE RAID course.

3-HR SALOMON SNOWSHOE RAID: The 3hr Raid is a team based snowshoe race combined with navigation by map and compass. Competitors will travel off-trail to checkpoints located throughout the stunning Copeland Forest in Horseshoe Valley. You can go as hard, or as easy as you like, however the more checkpoints you collect the higher you'll rank. Teams of Two will have up to 3-hours to collect as many checkpoints as possible.

5K & 10K SNOWSHOE RAIDS: The 5K & 10K Raids are open to soloists, and will follow marked routes through the powder strewn hills and valleys near Horseshoe Resort. Although the routes will be marked, competitors should expect to traverse numerous steep hills, valleys & riverside trails.

4th Annual Dr. Jay Hit and Run Golf Classic - June 15th 2009

If you are looking for a fun filled event for your next athletic challenge then look no further than Hit and Run Golf. This latest multi-sport phenomenon combines speed, endurance and skill. The concept of the game is to shoot the lowest golf score in the fastest time possible. Your total score is the number of shots taken plus the time in minutes to play. Last year’s event winner shot an amazing 83 in just 65 minutes for a total score of 148, but you don’t have to be a great golfer or amazing runner to have fun.

This year’s event will be held at Angus Glen Golf and Country Club, one of Canada's top golf courses, on Monday June 15th, 2009. The recipient of the funds raised will once again be the Dr. Jay Foundation, which funds the Dr. Jay Grief Counseling Program. This is the only program in Canada where specifically trained palliative care therapists work with dying children and kids who are about to lose a parent and help the kids and families deal with the tragedy of death. To learn more about the Foundation and Grief Program please go to www.drjayfoundation.com.

This year there will be TWO EVENTS going on simultaneously:
The Lone Runner Event where each participant plays by himself/herself, carries up to 6 clubs and starts with only 6 golf balls,

    AND

The Tandem Golf Event with teams of 2 competing. Players will alternate with their partner between playing one hole and riding in a golf cart the next.

    AN ADDED BONUS
ALL REGISTRANTS WILL RECEIVE A 2 FOR 1 COUPON FOR A ROUND OF GOLF INCLUDING CART AT ANGUS GLEN TO BE USED EITHER FROM APRIL 15-MAY 8, 2009 OR FROM OCTOBER 14 TO THE END OF THE 2009 GOLF SEASON

Toronto Santa Speedo Run 2008 - Saturday December 13

With the weather turning cold(er), and all the festive adornments going up (though they've really been up since the day after Halloween), naturally one's thoughts turn to...horrifying images of pasty people in nothing but Speedos.

Yes, it's time again for for the Toronto Santa Speedo Run. In the three years since I started this idiocy we've managed to raise almost $70,000 for the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, we've appeared in newspaper, radio, television and magazine (my dream of appearing in Sports Illustrated fulfilled, though not exactly as I planned), offended hundreds and thrilled thousands...ish.

For those of you new to this thing, here's the lowdown: 100% of the funds are used for the Toys and Games fund at the hospital, to help make the stay of Toronto's bravest patients a little easier. The event is a fun run through the streets of Yorkville on December 13, 2008, and the key difference between this and other runs (besides that fact it starts in a bar) is what we wear (or don't): all participants run in only running shoes, Speedo bathing suits and strategically-placed adornments.

Who wouldn't want to be associated with this (please, lower your hands)? Regardless, I'd love for you to be part of the mirth and jocularity so join us at the bar at Hemingways Restaurant in Yorkville around the 1PM to have a pint and cheer us on. Alternatively (or additionally), it would be great to have a contribution online. Secure on line donations can be made with VISA, MasterCard or American Express and an electronic tax receipt will be sent to you by email.

You can Click Here to make an online donation now.

To learn more about the event, go to www.torontosantaspeedorun.com where you can get all the gory details, see photos from past years and even see video of our appearance last year on Breakfast Television.

    Thanks for the support.

    Matt
